Owen Wright stuns in the opening heat at 2011 Billabong Rio Pro – Surfing News
Owen Wright of Australia clinched the opening heat with a sterling score of 13.60, at the first round of the 2011 Billabong Rio Pro, held in Brazil, on Wednesday, May 18.
Heitor Alves of Brazil took the second place with a score of 7.67, while Bobby Martinez of USA finished third with a total score of 7.47 in the first heat.
In the second heat, Adrian Buchan of Australia was placed first with a genuine score of 11.84, while Adam Melling scored a total of 11.16 and Kai Otton settled with 7.90 points, in the following heat.
Meanwhile, Taj Burrow of Australia won the third heat of the day with the highest score of 16.33. Burrow said, “It was kind of scary for a second there, right when they decided to start the competition the wind started howling, but then it cleaned up heaps.
I got two fun ones at the start so I’m happy.”
On the other hand, Ricardo Santos of Brazil wound up second with an individual score of 11.17 and Alejo Muniz rounded the top three with 10.60 points, in the respective heat.
The fourth heat was won by Mick Fanning of Australia with a sterling score of 15.07, while Simao Romao of Brazil snared the second place with a total score of 12.36 and Dusty Payne of Hawaii, grabbed the third spot with 11.66 points.
Fanning said, “It was tricky trying to find the right one out there, but I watched the heat before and noticed that guys that were doing turns back-to-back were getting scores, so I tried to concentrate on that. They weren’t the biggest waves, but they just
allowed three turns straight away.”
Patrick Gudauskas of USA stood-up first in the fifth heat of the 2011 Billabong Rio Pro with a matchless score of 8.13 out of 10. Jordy Smith (ZAF) settled second with a score of 8.07, while Igor Morais of Brazil earned third with 6.34 points.
In the sixth heat, Kelly Slater of USA placed first with an intriguing score of 15.17, while Julian Wilson of Australia nabbed the second spot with 14.37 and Peterson Crisanto of Brazil, wound up third with 3.84 points in the following heat.
Jadson Andre of Brazil won the seventh heat with a score of 14.33, while Jeremy Flores of France captured the eight-heat with 13.56 points. Damien Hobgood of USA finished first in the ninth heat with a score of 12.00, whereas, Cory Lopez took the tenth heat
with 11.54 points.
The last and the eleventh heat of the day was won by Daniel Ross of Australia, with a sterling score of 14.90, while Taylor Knox of USA clinched the final heat with a score of 15.03 in the event held at Rio de Janeiro.
