The English International, who enjoyed a remarkable 15-year career at Anfield, has not pocketed a scalp against his former club since leaving them to join Real Madrid in 2004.
During his stint with the Merseyside club, he notched up 158 goals in 297 appearances, winning scores of accolades including the Ballon d’Or award in 2001.
However, despite his innumerable services for Liverpool, the striker does not hold a high place amongst the Reds fans, as he joined their bitter league rivals, Manchester United, later on in his career.
Owen has also, from time to time, criticized the Reds for overusing him during the early part of his career, holding them responsible for his injury marred career. He once said that he would have been a much better player now had he been handled by a more
able management.
Nonetheless, with Stoke set to square off against Brendan Rodgers’ troops on Wednesday, Owen unravelled his ambition of leaving his imprint on the match.
He pointed out that he has never been able to score a goal against Liverpool in his career, and that he would be desperate to reverse that reality on Wednesday.
“It is a strange feeling really playing against your old club, especially one where you were for around 15 years,” he told the reporters in an interview.
“Liverpool are a big part of my life and career and I had some of the best times of my life at the club. So certainly I have happy memories. I have not been so happy playing against them since; I have never scored and not particularly enjoyed it.”
Stoke City acquired the services of the veteran forward as a free agent in summer, after he completed his stipulated deal with the Red Devils. However, he is yet to score his first goal for the Potters despite having made 4 appearances. The last time he
started for them was back in October, 27th. He is likely to appear as a second half substitute on Wednesday.
