I have a 25 year old pony, Calico. I am about to get a 6 year old horse. I feed Calico Equine Senior. Will i be able to give the 6 year old equine senior too? What would be better? I don't want to have 2 different kinds, so 1 kind for both of them is what i want. Which kind will meet both their needs?

  1. I use Blue Seal Strider feed for my 6 year-old and am very happy with it--i would probably use it for older horses too because it is meant for all adult horses. It is just a very basic 11% pellet feed for horses that also get a good supply of hay/grass for pleasure riding. If you ride strenuously every day it probably isn't right for your horses though. Blue Seal Trotter would be a good alternative if you horses don't get much hay or grass!

  2. I run a show barn in California and we really like the LMF products.  I would try out the LMF Showtime.  It doesn't make your horses hot and really helps put weight on and shine their coats.  If you want something with glucosamine and chondroitin try the LMF Senior feed.  It doesn't put quite as much of a shine and show condition on the horses, but it is a great beet-pulp based complete feed that would be fine for both of your horses.

  3. Senior IS a complete feed, letsjump.

Yes, you can feed Senior to a younger horse.  It has a few extra nutrients and is generally easier to digest than the other complete feeds.  I feed it to one of my 5 year olds and she does just fine on it.

  4. no that will do no harm. any horse can eat senior mix.

  5. We have a 24 year old Appy gelding and a 15 year old POA.  So, we have one that needs a lot extra, and one that doesn't need much food at all (he is fat now!UGH!) We don't want to risk him foundering.  The pony stays in the stall at night now while the older guy is out in the field or eating grass out of our yard during the day and he gets alfalfa hay during the night.  It's real hard dealing with separate feeding programs, but we feel it has to be done.  We don't have much pasture (only about 3 acres of weeds!) which is why our old guy hangs out in our yard.  We hope to put up some temporary electric fencing before winter so we can feed them their hay seapartely in the field.

    Good luck!

  6. I use nutrena Safe Choice on all of my horses and they look and act great

  7. it wont hurt to feed equine senior, but the 6 year old doesnt need it. i would try a complete feed if i were you. i've been happy with triple crown complete. it gives my older horses what they need and the younger horses what they need. all in all i've been very happy with it. great performance as well!

good luck and hope i helped!

  8. You can feed the 6 yr old horse the equine senior, it just has more nutrients and stuff so the 6yr old horse will have more energy

  9. The woman who owns my barn feeds a mix of a Sporthorse blend and Equine Senior.  There are 6 horses at the barn ranging from 8 years to 30 years.  The mix seems to satisfy everyone, they are all in good health and body weight.
