  1. $35 a day is so 80's. That doesnt cover much of anything anymore. Anyone charging $35 a day isnt taking care of your horses very well.

Lets say you own 5 horses at $35 per day.

    Thats $1225 a week

Trainer would have to pay groom roughly $450 per week to groom 5 horses.

Trainer would have to pay exercise rider  $250 a week to gallop 5 horses an average of 5 days a week at $10 a pop.

Trainer would have to pay roughly $75 per week for commercial blend feeds.

Trainer would have to pay roughly $130 per week for 10 bales of timothy and 3 bales of alfalfa.

Trainer would have to pay roughly $150 per week for bedding.

Another $100 per week for medications, vitamins, supplements, etc.

If theres stall rental, walking wheel charges, etc....that would eat up well over the $1225

Certainly HEA, you dont think the trainer trains for free?

I wish people would stop living in the eighties. Everything has gone up!

In order for the trainer to do the job correctly and not cheat or short change your horses, a trainer shouldnt charge less than $60 per day.

If you are still paying $35 a day, you are cheap and have no business in the business.

  3. Owning a racehorse can be very expensive.

First, you have to actually purchase the horse, which most of the time, the more money you spend, the better horse your buying. That can also be exactly the opposite. It really depends on the type of care the horse is getting. You can purchase a horse anywhere from $2500 to $75000+. Once, you make the purchase, you need to find a decent trainer. You will have to pay the trainer a "day fee." There is not a ste price, but it's usually $35/day which covers the care, feed, products for taking care for the horse, gallop boy and groom, etc. You also have to pay vet bills, which are outrageous, and pay for shoes about once a month. Owning a horse is usually for people who have the money and do this as a hobby, not as a living. But you will find very few that do this for a living, owning a horse is not easy.
