Oxana Savchenko clinches Women’s 400m freestyle gold – 2012 Paralympic Games
Oxana Savchenko of Russia clinched gold medal of Women’s 400m freestyle in S12 category on initial day of the swimming events at the 2012 London Paralympic Games in Aquatics Centre on Thursday, August 30.
Savchenko spoiled the party of her opponents by claiming the crown of the 400m discipline. She showed no mercy to her opponents and transpired on the finishing end for first position.
The Russian swimmer faced tough competition from Great Britain’s Hannah Russell in the first half but with her unmatchable efforts in the second half, she tapped the wall for gold medal.
Savchenko gained a half body length lead over her following swimmer and hit the wall for gold medal with a timing of 4 minutes and 37.89 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Russell, who stayed 0.71 seconds slower and hit the finishing wall for second position by producing a time of 4 minutes and 38.60 seconds.
The British swimmer was traced by Deborah Font of Spain, who remained 1.15 seconds behind and stepped on the victory stand for bronze medal by clocking a time of 4 minutes and 39.75 seconds.
Font remained nearly one and a half body length ahead of Anna Efimenko of Russia, who failed to reach the podium and secured fourth position of the race by submitting a time of 4 minutes and 51.29 seconds.
Fifth fastest spot of the event was obtained by Natali Pronina of Azerbaijan, who suffered a loss of 2.11 seconds behind and submitted an effort of 4 minutes and 53.40 seconds.
Pronina was trailed by Amaya Alonso of Spain, who proved her eligibility for sixth position of the race by touching the wall with a timing of 4 minutes and 53.59 seconds.
Seventh fastest spot of the race was secured by Naomi Maike Schnittger of Germany, who posted a time of 4 minutes and 56.38 seconds.
The German swimmer was chased by Yuliya Volkova of Ukraine, who ended up her swim in eighth best place by reporting a time of 5 minutes and 00.18 seconds.
Furthermore, Savchenko expressed contentment over her victory after the event.
