  1. A riffle will form in the main channel of a river (or stream.) This diverts the water current around the debris to  the side of the river. This process continues on the outside of the bend, and on the inside of the bend, where the water travels slower and the river is convex, deposition occurs. If the neck of the river is eroded to such an extent as it breaks through to the otherside of the bend, water will be diverted and flow along this straight section. During times of flooding, deposition will occur and the cut-off meander (or slip-off slope) will be cut off, eventually drying up due to a lack of water supply.
