Question:

Oxford University- How competitive is admissions?

Hey everybody!

I've recently been looking into Oxford University in England because my friend spent his summer studying abroad there and absolutely loved it. From the way he talks about Oxford and from what I've read, Oxford seems like the college of my dreams.

Unfortunately, being an abroad school, there is no "Princeton Review" or "College Board" profile on the school, so I don't know how competitive admissions is and what I'd have to do to get in (take any extra tests besides the SAT, etc.)

I've been looking all over online but can't seem to find any information. If anybody would be kind enough to enlighten me on the admissions at Oxford, or has a link that goes to that- that would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

  1. Oxford University is a very competitive school. It's a lot like getting into Standford, Princeton, or Harvard.  I actually knew a friend who tried to get into Oxford, and failed to do so.  He sent in his application, took the interviews, then waited for them to call him back.  A week later, he got the call.  But only it wasn't the type of call he was expecting to receive. They said NO!  Though, this is not saying that you won't get in, I'm just giving an example of the challenging it was for my friend, and what you might have to face.

But best of luck to you!

a very difficult, hard to gain entrance.

  2. I'm assuming you are from America. Oxford is the best university in England, UK. I'm from the UK.

Oxford is very competitive. You could say that Oxford is like Harvard, Yale and other Ivy Leagues which are very hard to gain entrance. Look at the Harvard entrance requirements and that should give you an idea of what test results and SATs to get.

After you have applied, they will review your application and if they like it, they will invite you to have an interview with them(sometimes two interviews).

This is what I found on the Oxford website:

    US qualifications

Successful candidates would typically have an excellent High School record supplemented by SAT I scores of at least 1,400 in Critical Reading and Mathematics and preferably also 700 or more in the Writing Paper, giving a combined score of at least 2,100, or ACT with a score of at least 32 out of 36. We would also expect Grade 5 in two or more Advanced Placement tests in appropriate subjects or SAT II two or three appropriate subjects at 700 or better.

You could ask you friend for advice, hope this helps, good luck.
