June 26: At stumps on the third day of the four-day match between Oxford University and Cambridge University, Oxford lead by 55 runs with seven wickets in hand, at The Parks, Oxford.
The home side, made a good comeback, as they restricted Cambridge from amassing a massive total in response to their own first innings tally of 280 runs by limiting Cambridge on a total of 267 runs, and then belting 42 runs for the loss of three wickets, at the end of the day’s play.
Earlier, the day started with Cambridge resuming their first innings from an overnight tally of 129 runs for the loss of three wickets, with AS Ansari on seven and PM Best on a knock of three runs.
The two batsmen started the innings tentatively in a bid not to lose an early wicket, however, later with 168 runs, Best became the first wicket of the day after getting caught behind by wicketkeeper SA Westaway off the bowling of SS Agarwal, on bolstering an innings of 19 runs.
Then ten runs later, Ansari was the next man to fall, as he was trapped in front of stumps by DC Pascoe, after jabbing an innings of 30 runs.
The rest of the batsmen made nifty contributions, but it was the phenomenal knock of 32 runs by JA Lodwick that set the tone for a neck to neck competition between the two sides, as Cambridge ended their first innings.
Coming out to bat the second time, Oxford comfortably scored 22 runs, but were then left in a state of shock and awe, losing their three wickets without adding a run to the overall tally, as they lost the wickets of SS Agarwal (19), BA Jeffery (3) and AJD Scott (0) in quick succession.
