Question:

Oxford or Cambridge University?

Does anyone, by any chance, attend (or have attended) either university?

Today I was told to consider going to these, despite not liking them. No offence meant to anyone, but I assumed that everyone there are snobs.

Hopefully I'm wrong - I would like to be proved wrong, but I would like personal experiences because I don't want to go there simply for education - I'd also like to enjoy my stay there and not be treated like a brick in a wall.

Oh, and only serious answers, please. Thanks x*x

  1. I have not attended the university but I hope to. You assumed that everyone there are snobs, well maybe some could be, but your just being stereotypical.

Now people from all over the world can apply there and Oxford claims everyone has an equal opportunity. If you are interested in applying, look into it, the location, student life and clubs you can join. You can also visit the university on an open day:

I do have something that may change your mind:

    Hope this helps.

  2. I'm starting a PGCE course in Cambridge in a couple of weeks & I can promise you that I'm not a snob : )

The only people I've met so far are the lecturers who interviewed me and some of the other interviewees and I can honestly say that there was no hint of snobbery from any of them - they all seemed really nice - so I hope when I meet everyone else next month they'll be equally friendly.

Maybe you could visit both universities on their open days - you would get a better idea of what they are both like then, but I definitely wouldn't dismiss applying to Oxford and Cambridge.  I don't know about Oxford, but Cambridge seems like a really nice city.

  3. oxford and cambridge have a much higher proportion of private school students than the rest of the universities

theres no denying that having oxford or cambridge on your CV has more kudos than other unis, but if youre not sure youd be happy in such an intensely studious collegiate environment for 3 years, maybe you should look at other options

i went to manchester.  its the biggest uni in the UK, and more graduate recruiters recruit at manchester than anywhere else.  having been to most other big cities in the uk - leeds, liverpool, sheffield, newcastle, birmingham - id definitely say manchester is the best

  4. It depends what it is you intend to read.

Any of the science subjects, I wouldn't hesitate to say Cambridge.

Humanities and the ilk, Oxford is probably the better choice.

Ultimately, they are both superb institutions with colleges specialising in anything you can think of.  What is more important is wether or not you like the "feel" of either place.

When you go for your interview, book yourself a couple of days in a local B&B.  Go walkabout around the town, around the colleges.  Get a feel for the place.  After all, you're likely to be spending the next three or four years of your life there.  Better make sure the place agrees with you.

    Best of luck.

  5. Oxford.only because i went there.

  6. dont assume that, well its mostly true

but there are some down to earth people there

deffinately apply ...youll have some great prospects

    good luck
