  1. its 2+, because chlorine is almost always 1-, and since there are two of those, 2+ is needed to balance it out.

  2. oxidation state of Mg i MgCl2 is 2+

    i.e x+ 2(-1)=0  oxidation state of chloride is -1

        x-2=0

    x=2
