I find that I itch constantly particularly around my face. I have taken Benedryl but it exhausts me..can anyone suggest some type of solution? Please don't tell me it's an allergic reaction..I do know this..but I have tried all the different pain meds and it's the same. So what I want is someone to suggest a solution other than benedryl..Thanks in advance for your suggestions..

  1. What you have is a reaction to morphine and drugs that are similar to morphine. It's not an allergic reaction per se, and it's the morphine that causes a histamine release that makes you itch.

There are painkillers that's not morphine or morphine like, but I've found that they do not work, at least not for me. I've also found that the antihistamines that my doctors have prescribed me is useless for the itch. The whole idea with the antihistamines (such as benedryl) is that you'll sleep it off or get to sleep for a while and get some rest from the itching. It won't cure the itching by it self.

You could ask your doctor to prescribe you painkillers that doesn't contain morphine or morphine like substances and see if it works for you. It might work for you.

Then there is the antihistamines that will make you tired and help you sleep better since rest is very important when you are in pain.

Then, try putting a cold and wet cloth where it itches. The itch won't go away, but I find that it lessens for a while.

Another option, that's not a good one, is to cut down on the pain killers, possibly altering them with the kinds that doesn't create an itch.  Taking the "non itch" ones in the morning and then the morphine ones in the evening adding antihistamines so that you can sleep during the night.

  2. Be grateful in a way many get hooked on these drugs. Have you ever tried Claratin? Also ask a doctor and a pharmacist about these two drugs first.
