  1. Yes.

  2. you don't 'scan' the card in the conventional scan sense - you lay your oyster card flat on the oyster symbol plate - do not wave the card over the top and expect it to work - you need a definite 'touch' down and pick up - for maybe a half a second - you soon get used to the procedure - the reader will beep and some have a green light to show it has recognised your card.

On most stations you need to 'touch' (in or out) for the barrier to open anyrate - if you are found on any transport with a card you have not 'touched in' you may be fined - if you do not 'touch out' (except on a bus) you may be penalised by paying a maximum fare.

  3. Yes.  If you dont touch out, the card simply registers an uncompleted journey and charges at a flat rate which can be more expensive than the actual fare, because it doesn't know where you ended your jourmey.

  4. you just have to remember what each scan is telling the system. Its simply telling the system where you are at that precise moment and whether your are entering or leaving the gate. So it cannot know your actual journey without tracking each gate you go through.

  5. yes. even if there are two gates out (like in stratford) u must touch both
