Question:

Oyster Card vs Travel Card – London - some help please?

What will be the best - the oyster card or the travel card?

We will be in London for 5 days and plan to stay in Dover Caste - New Cross Inn - think it is in South East London. We will be visiting the attractions in Central London and Windsor Castle, Hampton Court and Richmond park.

How do the costs for both cards work and with the 'top-up' functionality of the Oyster Card - how much will be needing to get to and from Central London? Can you combine the two and what are the benefits?

Is there a time constraint on when you may travel - like peak trafic times?

Please help, this will be our first time in London.

  1. New Cross Inn is at 323 New Cross Road, SE14 6AS ... if you enter that postcode on the Transport for London website www.tfl.gov.uk in their journey planner (on the right hand side of the page) it will work out your journey for you ... on the same website you'll find tube maps and other things which you might find useful

as to whether the Oyster or the travel card is best for you, I'd say the Oyster because it's so flexible ... if you make enough journeys on London Transport in one day that you reach the level of a one day travelcard, then it's capped at that point and it won't deduct any more from your Oyster card ... I'd suggest you put something like £20 on the card to start with
