The former Werder Bremen player took out time to talk about his responsibilities with club and country, sharing that both managers give him utmost freedom to play in his own manner.
With impressive performances for Die Mannschaft and Real Madrid, Mesut Ozil is in impressive touch. The creative attacking midfielder is considered an important part of first team fixtures for club and country, attributing his success to the free role given
to him by his respective managers.
Ozil commented that by virtue of his playing position, he is allowed the independence he craves to fully showcase his footballing abilities. Moreover, he explained that it is because of the freedom that he likes to play in the said position.
“My playmaker position gives me freedom to attack in another post that would not, in that sense the game makes me very happy. Both in Madrid and in Germany, when I attack, I'm free.”
Continuing on the topic, Ozil revealed that he likes to move around to surprise the opponents, and looks to use this ability to his full advantage for both Germany and at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The 24-year-old rejected suggestions that this lack of tactical stability does not change the way he plays, whilst claiming the contrary.
“I can fall right, left, go for middle ... I have the ability to surprise and try to take advantage of this ability both in Madrid and in the selection. I really do not think it changes the way I play as a team or another.”
Reflecting on the roles assigned to him by Joachim Low and Jose Mourinho, Ozil commented that he has the confidence of the respective coaches, who in turn have allowed him to play the way he likes. He added that the duo look to make the most of his abilities
in their plans.
“They both want to play the most, that everything in the field. Each one tries to exploit me the most, that all,” he commented.
