Ozzie Guillen cites hasty attitude by hitters as problem behind fewer hits coming off – MLB Update
As pitiable as the Marlins' offence looked in the first two regular season games, manager Ozzie Guillen has come up with an explanation. He believes hitters are trying too many things at one time while focusing little on the actual pitches they are facing.
He did not rely much on excessive travel that players have to do for their last game against Cincinnati Reds for contriving any excuse.
He may have done so and have easily escaped the rising criticism against the team. After all, players reached the hotel at 3:45 a.m. and only a few hours later they had to take to the field, finding little time to make necessary adjustments.
“We have to regroup,” Guillen said. “Hopefully, with the day off [Friday], we group and clear our minds and get ready. You start putting pressure on yourself when you’re not getting hits.”
The fact Marlins repeated the same mistakes they committed in their first game against St. Louis Cardinals points to their inability to find enough time to learn from their mistakes.
Right now the manager is working on letting players know at which time to swing and at which to let it go. Inability to adjust to immediate changes they must have made at the pitches actually led to their failure in the last two games.
“I think it seems like [we’re] a little bit too anxious and trying to get two hits in one at bat,” said Guillen. “I think, right now, we’re trying to do too much on every swing.”
Critics believe that Marlins are not going to see any change in their fate in upcoming games as their offence was weak right from the beginning of Spring Training. Since the problem seems perennial, they will fail again and again, they argue.
After the fans are turning to the new Marlins ballpark in large numbers and enjoying their time there, the expectations will be higher from the club. The fans will be disheartened as they see their side disgracing in front of the teams that the club will
be facing during the season at the new ballpark.
If not the World Championship, a performance that can let fans feel great about them until the next season starts will be enough for Marlins to justify euphoria the fans are having for the moment.
