Ozzie Guillen fires back at Chicago White Sox pitching Coach Don Cooper - MLB News
The Chicago White Sox former legendary manager Ozzie Guillen has responded loudly to current White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper.
Cooper has recently accused Guillen in a radio interview of not looking out for his coaching staff. Cooper also accused Guillen of negotiating with general manager Kenny Williams regarding a contract extension.
Guillen, who was clearly flared-up with all these accusations from his former colleague, told a newspaper and responded with strong words.
Ozzie explained briefly and said, “Cooper needs to look in the mirror, He didn't backstab me. He backstabbed his fellow coaches, the guys he worked with for years. Everyone does. Look, Coop is not a good coach; he's a great coach.”
After serving the White Sox as manager for almost seven years, the team management and Guillen parted ways in 2011 just before the end of the regular season. However, Don Cooper was able to manage a two year extension in his current contract.
Later, Guillen joined the Florida Marlins for the next two years. Guillen’s vacant position was filled on October 6, 2011 when Ken Williams brought Robin Ventura as new manager of the White Sox for the next three years.
Ozzie Guillen, who himself mentioned in the past as he does not deserve an extension in his contract due to the poor performance in the 2011 regular season. He was disappointed in his performance and the regular season record.
Though, this year did not prove good for the White Sox under Guillen’s supervision, but his past managerial record has been certainly tremendous. He is the third-most games winnining manager in the White Sox franchise history. He has also earned great acknowledgement
when he won the American League manager (AL) of the year award in 2005.
It will be interesting to see how this war of words between Guillen and Cooper pans out during the off-season. However, by the looks of things, Guillen does not look like he will be sitting around and keeping his thoughts to himself as Cooper has angered
him.
