Ozzie Guillen not fired due to Fidel Castro incident, clarifies Larry Beinfest - MLB Update
Miami Marlins’ President for Baseball Operations, Larry Beinfest has explained that Ozzie Guillen has not been dismissed mainly due to his comments related to Fidel Castro.
He has stated that his inability to do the job as a manager effectively has led to an ouster from the club. The task he was primarily assigned by the team was not carried out by him properly.
Guillen had a controversies-ridden 2012 regular season. He was found involved in activities that were not pertinent to his duties as skipper of the club.
Every next day, he was making headlines. Sometimes it was praising Fidel Castro, who is widely recognised as a usurper and the one responsible for the sufferings of the people residing in the Cuban community of Miami.
Similarly, he was part of the controversies emanating from the field during the matches. He was short-tempered as he shouted at the players on a number of occasions while the games progressed.
Instead of accepting the criticism on Twitter, he would blast out at his detractors and would use abusive language while speaking out against them.
In the whole process, the team he was managing was standing among the worst performers of the season. He could not respond his critics by helping the Marlins improve their winning percentage. His players were below par and the worst part was the fact that
there was hardly any attempt made by him to aid them in their time of troubles.
While clarifying the decision of firing Guillen, Beinfest has made it clear that they accounted for a range of factors before they concluded that he cannot remain a part of the club. While many may believe that it was the Castro incident that instigated
his sacking as he has elaborated that it is not true.
"I don't think it's any one thing. I think it's cumulative. It's a complete evaluation, and we wanted to move forward," Beinfest said. "Look, there was nothing positive about that. It was a black eye for Ozzie, for the organization and we moved on it. We
tried to move on from it and we recognized the magnitude of it. I would say that if we were going to say Ozzie got fired because of the Castro thing, that wouldn't be fair. Ozzie got fired because of an evaluation over a number of things."
If the fiasco related to Castro was so important for the team, they may have fired Guillen during the season instead of slamming suspension for a few games.
In any case, it is hard to ignore that the Castro episode was insignificant while the Marlins deliberated about the dismissal of Guillen.
The Marlins will be looking for a replacement now. They will be ascertaining that their new manager instils confidence in the players and helps them put up better performances in the upcoming seasons.
