Ozzie Guillen’s comments about Fidel Castro proved watershed for Miami Marlins in the season-Part 3
If anybody expects that Guillen is going to change, one has reasons to doubt. It is not for the first time he put himself into hot water. Throughout his career he has been prone to controversies.
Speaking out regardless of the public sensitivities is an inextricable part of his personality. Irrespective of the fact that he has apologised and pledged to stay away from such controversies, it is hard to write off any possibility which sends him into
the public spotlight again for the wrong reasons.
Part of the reasons why he is vulnerable is speaking English as opposed to Spanish which is his original language. Not familiar with the connotations of certain words, he tries to say something which can be interpreted in a way he never actually meant.
While defending himself during the Castro incident, Guillen put forward the argument that since he spoke in English he could not convey what he actually wanted to explain to the reporter.
Short of suitable lexicons to elaborate something in English, he ended up using the word which gave people an impression that he takes inspiration from Castro.
Had he communicated in Spanish while talking about Castro, he may have said something which never sparked the controversy in the first place. Who knows, people will not have even bothered paying attention to his words.
However, nothing can help Guillen escape the blame. Even if his intentions were different, he should not be allowed safe passage.
Given the fact that in the past he has been careless regarding emotions of others, he should not be given the benefit of the doubt.
He did utter that he loves Castro and that is it. There is no way in the world that he can deny this. Every excuse he gives now is bound to be a fabricated one and without proper basis.
Below is written what Guillen commented in Time magazine. Even a man in the street can conclude that he cannot justify his contention that he intended something else.
"I respect Fidel Castro. You know why? A lot of people have wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last 60 years, but that son of a b***h is still there," he said.
A person, who can go on to speak derogatory words against a columnist without thinking of how his remarks can hurt him, can never be trusted.
His actions show that he does not respect the rules of the game and when something occurs against his wishes he is more likely to fight against them.
Guillen is cynical of the immigration laws of the country. He accuses the political authorities of observing discrimination against the Latino players and favouring Asians.
He thinks of himself as the symbol of perfection and rises in fury whenever somebody denounces his ways. Even on Twitter where people have a catharsis of their heart and write those things they may not believe themselves, he cannot resist blasting out at
them. As if having a guilty conscious, he tries to silence critics even before they have uttered something.
If he had an impeccable reputation, he may have been pardoned by the fans and may have given one more chance.
The best Guillen can do is analyse the position that he holds and think why his career is embroiled in controversies.
