P.J. Walters helps Minnesota Twins thrash Chicago White Sox 9-2 – MLB Update
Minnesota Twins thrashed Chicago White Sox 9-2 at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, Illinois on Tuesday, May 22 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Gordon Beckham made his presence felt as he homered to left centre in the first to give the White Sox an important 1-0 lead. Alexi Casilla brought the Twins back into the contest with an RBI double in the second and then Jamey Carroll singled to centre to dent White Sox’s confidence levels. Josh Willingham, once again, gave promising results as he singled to left in the fourth to extend Minnesota’s lead to 6-1.
However, the star of the show was Justin Morneau who hit a three run home run to right in the fourth to help the Twins establish complete control over the contest. Starting pitcher P.J. Walters had a great time on the mound as he won for the second time this season to break Chicago’s four game winning streak.
"My bullpen was smiling when they came in shaking hands. We haven't seen that very much around here," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "(Walters) ate up a whole ballgame's worth of innings, which really helps your bullpen out. We've really been beat up out there."
"The goal of the night is to always keep them out of there," Walters said in a post game interview. "To have yesterday off and then the day off, that's good rest for a few of them."
The Twins will be very pleased to improve their record to 15-27. With still plenty of games to be played before the All Star Break, Terry Ryan and company will have a great change to get over the .500 win percentage mark if they continue their good form.
Chicago, on the other hand, will be hoping to turn the tables with a string performance in the second game of the series. The bullpen failed to live up to the expectations on Tuesday and It will be interesting to see if they can work on the weaker links of their game play to put things back on track.
