Tough new provisional driving licence laws have led to P-platers being suspended at a rate of one every 36 hours for excessive speed or too many demerit points, figures show.

In the first nine-and-a-half months of the laws, 188 provisional drivers holding P1 or P2 licenses were suspended for exceeding the speed limit by more than 40km/h or losing demerit points. In the first 10 months after the laws were introduced, 58 people aged 17 to 24 died on Queensland roads
