Well I have a 2001 Toyota Avalon. Today while driving my check engine light came on. I took it to Autozone and they said it was a P0174 Bank #2 Lean. I really didnt notice any performance problems and it seemed to run fine. However it once, did feel like the engine surged under acceleration, as if power suddenly increased. I checked my oil and it was fine. HOWEVER, the engine did seem unusually hot. I actually burned my hand holding the plastic end of the dipstick. I could feel alot of heat coming from the engine when I popped the hood as well.(Outside temp approx. 70-75F). Im not sure what the problem is. It seems to run fine, and the autozone mechanic said hes been driving his car lean for years with no problems. Could it be the MAF sensor? Im not going to replace it since its $200. If it is that and its running fine, Ill just clear the code. Maybe O2 sensor? Im not sure. But I just bought the car 2 weeks ago and it has a 3 month warranty so ill prob make the dealer fix it 4 free.

  1. Great you did the right thing.  I wouldn't do anything about it either.  I keep hearing that the emissions (check engine light) tolerances are closer on the Toyota than any other car made.  When you say it had a lot heat coming, what did the temp indicator say in the cockpit.  All cars are extremely hot, but you've made the right decision, take it back to the dealer.
