Question:

P51 mustang flight?

my grand father is 87 and during the second world war he flew P51s escorting bombers on raids over Germany. His fondest wish in the world is to just sit in on again before he dies and have a few moments alone to remember his fallen comrades from those days long ago. Does anyone know where I might find a person that owns one of these aircraft to make my grandfathers dream a reality. THANKS FOR ANY INFO YOU CAN PROVIDE.

  1. Here's a couple of websites to check out:

    http://www.incredible-adventures.com/t33...

    http://www.mustangflights.com/

    http://www.stallion51.com/

Great idea! Please make sure they are aware of your Grandfather's age, though....

  2. In addition to the links previously provided, be sure to checkout the link below.  Contact them to see if they can help.  They are looking for legends like your grandfather.

Also, if you are near Tampa-Orlando, there are always Mustangs at Sun N Fun.  I'll be there next month.

  3. Jack Roush of Roush Racing has a pretty famous P-51.  Look on the web for airshow dates.  Especially if you live in the midwest, near Oshkosh.  I guarantee you'll find some P-51's.

Also check USAF open house airshows.  They will sometimes do a "Heritage Flight," with a P-51 and an F-16 (or F-15, F-22) flying as a pair.  The Mustang lands, and talk to the pilot.

  4. At the big air show in Oshkosh Wisconsin every summer they have quite a few privately owned P-51s there. It's officially called the EAA AirVenture.

If your grandfather were to go to the show and asked around he might get a chance to sit in one of the planes.

  5. Here's a compnay that provides flights:

You might also search out "warbirds" online to find organizations or individuals who fly the Mustang. There are quite a few around the country.

If you email me with your location, I can help you find someone near you.

  6. Tom Cruise has one.

  7. Several of the answers provided information which may be of help.  In addition, you might try contacting the nearest aviation museums in your area.  Almost any decent aviation museum will have a P-51, and I would think most curators would be honored to accommodate your grandfather's request.  If I had a P-51, I certainly would be.  Good luck, and a "thank you" to your grandfather for his service.

  8. Hope you find your bird man.

  9. Contact KADS, Addison Airport. (You can look up the phone number on airnav.com,) and you're going to ask for a number for, (silly as this sounds,) The Toy Barn.

It's an eccentric fellow that collects and flies old aircraft, his mechanic can be standoffish, but that's the closest one to me that I know of.

The Cavenaugh museum, also at KADS, might have one, I don't recall off the top of my head.

Outside of those two resources, I'd say call the Commerative Air Force, based out of Midland, Tx, and they should be able to point you to one who's owner would welcome the opportunity to cheer an aging vet.

    JT.

  10. Show this video to your grandfather on your computer:

    http://www.grayeagles.org/video.htm

Then go to this site: http://www.gml2007.com/

and click on "legands attending" and he may see photos of some of his fellow pilots.

It is the largest gathering of P-51 aircraft in the United States.

If you email me with your location and I will tell you where the nearest P-51 is located, and who owns it so that you might be able to take him to see it locally.  There are about 113 in the FAA registry, and others that are not currently registered.

You should learn to fly - it is a wonderful experience!
