Question:

P60 Help?!?!?

I am a student and I shouldn't be taxed, and I have been. I have my P60, but the tax I apparently payed last tax year, according to my P60 is MUCH lower than I actually payed.

I've also been 'paying' NI contributions, but the company I work for don't have my national insurance number, and the tax office said they have no information of me ever having worked there!

So my company has essentially stolen money off me, and are making it seem like it is less than it is.

What should I do?!

Thanks

  1. If you have a P60 the tax office must have their own copy of it.  If, having seen your P60 they still think you don't work for that employer they will know that something odd is going on.

Take a photocopy of the P60, keep the original and send the copy to the tax office with a letter explaining that it shows much less tax than was deducted from you (is the pay figure right?); that you did in fact have NI deducted from you, and will they please look into the discrepancy because you'd like the refund that's due to you.  If you have any payslips showing how much has been deducted, photocopy those as well and send them.

If you want to add to your letter that you now think your employer must have been pocketing some of the "tax" and all the ni, that might help the tax office decide to investigate your employer.  If they do, they will look at the records for everybody working there - possibly past employees as well - and will NOT let on to your employer who tipped them off - or even why they are interested.
