PAC-10 unhappy with Kelly’s comments
The PAC-10 governing body was not happy with comments made by Oregon Ducks’ head coach Chip Kelly during the halftime break in his club’s game against the Stanford Cardinals.
In an interview with an ESPN sideline reporter Kelly vocalized his displeasure with the game’s officiating, stating. “I just want to know why they won’t come talk to us, I think [Stanford coach] Jim [Harbaugh] and him [the referee] got friends. I don’t know,
I just want some explanation on some things.”
The interview came after Kelly was involved in a heated altercation with the officiating crew.
The game between the Ducks and Stanford was an important one for both sides, as they were both heavily ranked and looking for their second win in conference play.
Regardless of the circumstances the PAC-10 governing body was not happy with Kelly’s comments. Conference commissioner Larry Scott was disappointed in the head coach’s actions, saying. “The PAC-10 has specific rules that prohibit our coaches from making public
comments about officiating and this prohibition specifically includes comments that create doubts about the credibility of the conference’s officiating program. The conference expects each PAC-10 coach to adhere to our standards of conduct and to conduct himself
or herself in a manner which will reflect credit on the institution and the conference.”
Despite the altercation with the officiating crew the Ducks were able to go on to a convincing 52-31 victory over the Cardinals. The win pushed the Ducks to the top of the of the conference standings, with a record of 5-0 and a conference record of 2-0. Moreover,
the victory helped to push the Oregon side into third in the AP Top 25.
Meanwhile, Stanford dropped to 4-1 and fell all the way to 16th in the rankings from ninth.
The Ducks next visit the Washington State Cougars, while Stanford will take on the USC Trojans.
