Question:

PADI Open Water Dive?

I'm thinking about becoming certified. All of these require an open water dive, but I don't exactly live in the Carribean or Hawaii, and I don't feel like diving in a cold murky lake or river.

What do you think about taking classes in one location and then etting the open water dive at a resort somewhere else? Is that safe?

  1. All PADI organizations allow you to do that. Once you pass the course you will be given up to one year to complete your dives which can be done anywhere via another PADI certified instructor, you will be given a card so the next instructor will see that you passed the classes.

  2. It is totally safe. A lot of people do that which is why PADI courses are set up the same no matter where you go. You can take up to a year to complete the Open Water course without having to take a mandatory refresher class. Just remember to make sure the resort you go to is PADI certified before you book your vacation and dives with them. NAUI dives are significantly more difficult to complete for a first timer. PADI certification also ensures that equipment and facilities are up to the safety standards set by the organization.

  3. Padi have solved this problem by introducing fast track in which allows you to do the theory at home and then try the good stuff in more favourable conditions,i hear it works very well.Find a padi club near your home and just ring and i am sure they will advise.Try Egypt for your fist time diving it is warm and reasonably cheap and with lots of safe diving.
