How does the test work. Is it in sections? Is it more of a physical test or a written test or both? How long is it? Does Emergency first response come before or after the rescue diver test? Are there any practice questions online?

  1. Scubabob is right in some respects, the course is conducted in sections, the EXAM however is not.

If you have started already you will be familiar with the chapters in the book and the answers at the end of each. Then the water work, where each aspect is taught in confined water and you need to be able to perform those exercises well.

Get to open water and there are some surprise scenarios for you (sbubabob's sound quite hard). You will be evaluated in this phase also.

The EXAM, however, is a mish mash of everything that you answered in the chapters, like the open water exam.

The EFR should be completed early in the course if not before.

  2. It's done in sections. Yes...there's a physical aspect to it as well as written tests. You may even be expected to fire off some oral answers when under physical / mental stress.

The medic portion of the course ought to be done before your in water day and...it's a day. A day you will remember for a long while. :) Get lots of rest beforehand, you'll need it. I remember the day I did my in water. November in the Great Lakes. 4 mock rescues ( the last one when we'd broken down our gear and had it loaded in our trunks, figuring we were done....nope) and our search and retrieval was located about 1/4 mile off shore. Nice swim.

To the best of my knowledge, no sample questions are online. The format is similar to most other PADI exams, the exception being the practical part. Just pay attention in class. Good luck. As to the exam. It's in two parts. Your medic practical/ written and your written exam for the Rescue part. That's what is meant by "done in sections", not what Robert is leading you to believe I meant.
