Question:

PAINFUL braces problem

First of all, I've had my braces for almost 2 1/2 years now, and this problem hasn't occured until today. My gums where one of my top back molars is has been hurting since yesterday. The gums feel swollen, and when I looked in the mirror, it almost appears that the hook of the bracket attached to that tooth is digging into the gum, and that the gums have almost grown over it. It's extremely painful,, although it's not doing much.

If anybody speaks from experience with this problem, please advise me on what to do.

It's the bracket with the hook in the top back that is actually one of those metal bands, that goes around your tooth so I think it would be very hard removing it.

Help please! Thank you.

  1. if its swollen it may well be infected!! definately see your dentist or orthodontist as soon as you can!!!

  2. Hey! i know what u mean. i used to have that problem. but now i have my braces off. my orthodontist used to give me these little wax things to put on it. and it really helped. i would consult your orthodontist about it.

    good luck!

  3. i would go to your orthodontist for an emergency. sounds painful♥

one of my friends had a herbst appliance(a big metal thing with bars that is attached to your bottoms but the bars go to your top--to correct an overbite). there are screws, and acually the screws and the appliance started sliding down into her bottom gums, it was freaky looking...the orthodontist had a hard time getting it out...and it hurt her when she got it out.♥
