I am painting a nursery room a light baby blue color...and right now it is a chocolate brown color...Will i need to paint the room white first or can i just skip that step like i want to?...I really want to know if the color will be affected by the brown if i do like two or three layers of the blue over it? Most educated answer that helps me the most gets 10 pts! thanks!

  1. Get a good stain-blocking primer, like Kilz, to mask the existing paint. Otherwise, the old color can bleed through the new paint and you'll end up having to put a bunch of paint coats on, which is more expensive and takes longer. The primer is cheaper (about $12 a gallon, compared to $30 or $40 or more for the paint) and it dries in about an hour before you can put on a second coat of primer or the paint coat. With multiple paint coats, you might have to wait until the next day to put down another coat.

  2. you can get primer paint tinted in a blue color. Its thicker than regular paint and you wouldnt have to put as many coats of regular blue paint to cover the brown. good luck =)

  3. putting a primer on would be the best idea to be safe but if you are having a baby blue themed room i think it would look really good with your chocolate brown walls! just a suggestion:)

  4. I painted my baby nursery a pale blue over a dark Taupe...what a pain! I used a grey/blue based primer (2 coats) to kill the brown and get a true blue coming through then did 2 coats of blue. It's worth investing on a better pait ( avoid Behr) as it doesn't apply as well/thick and you end up having to do more coats and use more paint.
