My main question is how do income tax dept come to know about someone's previous PAN if he apply with new address and different date of birth ? I mean to ask that before providing new PAN to someone what system or technique IT Dept. follow to check whether someone is already having PAN or not ?

  1. Having duplicate PAN for the same individual or institution is illegal and is an offence. Please report to the IT dept. if you have.


  2. You have to provide address proof and identity proof while applying for an PAN card. Usually what they ask for that is autheriseddocuments like passport, driving license or electral voter card. No one can have duplicate of them. All of them have a unique number in it. By using those unique number department of income tax can track your details!

  3. You are requesting for system and proceduer details which are confidential and cannot be obtained.

    PAN is a sensetive and confidential document and is  security oriented to prevent frauds and misrepresentations.

  4. Obtaining/possessing more than one PAN is against the law and may attract a penalty upto Rs.10,000. Therefore it is advisable not to obtain/possess more than one PAN. If you have more than one PAN, you should surrender the unused PAN by logging into ITD website at www.incometaxindia.gov.in.
