  1. a horse emptying its bowels before the race is a great sign and also if its head is upright that is also good

  2. this question comes down to personal preferance and methods!

some things i look at are......

    sweating horses........ BAD

    swishing tail..........BAD

a horse thats pulling with its head........ BAD

take an educated guess, if you think the horse looks overweight, it may well be overweight........ its some thing you probly need to do some homework on, as some horse are bigger than others!

when a horse is prancing or on its toes,............. this varies between horses as each horse has its own personality, i'l give you a couple of examples of some horses that i bak...... 1) a sprinter named takeover target, when he's on his toes before a race i know he's ready to run a good race

    2) a stayer named no wine no song, this is a horse that i need to see nice and relaxed before i bak it, when i see him just loping around and eating the odd blade of grass i know he will be in the race up to his eye balls. i guess what im saying is it just depends on the individual horse, its something you need to pay attention too, so you know what sort of characteristics the horse has, for future betting.

hope this helps, and not confuses you to much.

    good luck and good punting!

  3. I love the Paddock inspection when I'm at the races because it helps me whittle down the 3/4 horses that I have chosen from the paper to 2 or even just 1.

Grinding of teeth is often a bad sign, and as previously said sweating up and generally misbehaving.  In colts so called coltish behaviour (won't go into detail here) is a definite no no especially if there happens to be a filly in the same race and if you notice a horse has a dirty bottom he might have a tummy ache..don't back him either...so that said rush to the other side of the course and watch them going down because if your horse bolts to post then he most probably won't win.  If he has high knee action and the going is good/firm he might like more cut in the ground...

.....and lastly if he winks at you definitely back him!!

  4. When I go racing I always make sure I look at the horses before I put a bet on.

Firstly I don't like horses that sweat too much.

After a number of years you can tell which horses are carrying too much  body weight.  Horses which prance about, are using to much energy. If a horse has not been out for say 50days plus maybe problems.

Lastly I always quickly try and look for a tell tale sign if not many people about when the jockey arrives, horse out for a run.

After saying all this I still manage to pick a loser.

    Good Punting

  5. If it's sweating between its back legs leave alone

If it's coltish leave well alone. Its mind is on things other than racing....

Always look for a horse that looks fit (ie it hasn't got a belly on it)

Always look for a horse with a nice shine on its coat. It's a sign of wellbeing

  6. Yea its pretty subjective. You can listen to horse racing experts like Roy Higgins giving live commentary on the radio from the mounting yard regarding his summation on how a horse will run from its appearance and giving his selections accordingly. More often than not the end result is completely wrong.(please no conspiracy theories)

In any case I must admit I look for a calm horse with a shinny coat but usually put my blinkers on and refer back to my form guide.
