I TOOK A DRUG SCREEN AND TESTED POSITIVE FOR CODIENE. I WAS CONTACTED AND TOLD THEM I'M PRESCRIBED CODONE. THEY SAID IT'S NOT THE SAME IN A SCREEN RESULT THEY METABOLIZE DIFFERENTLY.I TOLD THEM I SPOKE WITH MY DOCTOR AND PHARMACY AND COULD PROVIDE SCRIPTS AND LETTERS. THEY SAID NO NEED IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE FOR CODONE TO SHOW AS CODEINE. THEY USED SOME MEDICAL LINGO ABOUT LEVELS OF TOXINS. COME TO FIND OUT THEY SUBMITTED A NEGATIVE RESULT AND I DIDN'T EVEN HAVE TO PROVIDE INFO FROM MY END. i'AM VERY PLESED BUT NOW CONFUSED. THEY WERE SO ADIMENT ABOUT THE POSITIVE RESULT. sORRY FOR THE SPELLING ERRORS.

  1. If a urine screen is taken within 2 hours after the ingestion of codeine )longer depending on a person's metabolism) codeine may be found in the urine screens.

Often the finding of codeine on a urine screen is a warning sign, as codeine is a metabolite of a street drug often mixed with heroin.  However, normally, if heroin had been taken both codeine and morphine would be found on the screens.

There are cutoff levels which have been established, which are used to exclude persons who are not abusing illegal opiates.  It has also been found that as opium is a product of poppies, a high ingestion of poppy seeds will on occasion give a false positive reading.

Hydrocodone is an opiate, and if you are taking that medication or oxycodone, they will test initially as opiates, but will not show up on Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry as codeine or morphine.

It is likely that you had a level that was below the cutoff levels and likely to be consistent with a false positive, so they submitted the result as a negative.

These tests usually have safeguards built in, and can be verified with further testing.  You were probably cleared on a subsequent test.
