PBSI hires ‘Former Greats’ to revive glory to Indonesian badminton – Badminton feature
The gradually declining standard of badminton in Indonesia has been a reason of major concern for the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) for the last couple of years and after the poor performance in London Olympics they have taken valuable measures
to bring back glory to the sport.
PBSI has hired the services of former great shuttlers including Olympic Champions Susi Susanti, Rexy Mainaky and Ricky Subagja and all of these shuttlers were world beaters of their time as they remained at the top of their game and earned many major titles
for Indonesia in the past.
The deteriorating quality of the sport in a country like Indonesia, which is considered one of the biggest badminton power houses in the world, forced PBSI to overhaul the whole system and make changes in order to produce better players by improving their
quality in all departments of the game.
The former World Number One Susi has been appointed as the in charge of development while Ricky will take office of public relations as officer in charge. Rexy will be performing his duties as the head of development along with Susi.
Koesdarto Pramono, the general secretary of PBSI, said that they will do their best to bring glory back to Indonesia and in this quest they will also need the required support. He also endorsed the inclusion of Rexy who has acquired a huge experience of
working in different countries including England, Malaysia and Philippines and has also shown positive results.
He stated, “We all know Rexy has coached overseas and those countries have made progress. This is the best team that we can form after discussing and consulting with all badminton stakeholders in the country.”
Indonesia’s top shuttler Simon Santoso, who is placed at number five in Men’s Singles world placements, also appreciated PBSI’s step and said that these former shuttlers will definitely bring positive changes into the game considering that they are well
aware of how to improve the skills of the players.
The World Number Seven Markis Kido, who along with Hendra Setiawan won the gold medal at 2008 Beijing Olympics in Men’s Doubles category, also appreciated the valuable steps that PBSI has taken to revive the standard of sport in the country.
He said, “I hope they can improve badminton here. They all are former great shuttlers, they know what we, shuttlers, need to do in order to improve our games. I’m happy to see former shuttlers are given crucial positions in the association. I will certainly
help them, if they ask, to bring back our glory days.”
Indonesian badminton has been suffering with lack of quality shuttlers for the last few years as besides some experienced players; there is no backup plan that could replace the seniors when they quit playing at international level.
However, hiring Susi, Rexy and Ricky on key designations will certainly help in the promotion of the game in the country as all of these former players know very well about how to elevate the level of players and how to put them on the right track that converts
them into world beaters by making them perfect in all aspects of the game.
All these former greats will be working with the former great Indonesian shuttler Christian Hadinata, the head of national training camp in Cupayung, situated in East Jakarta.
