Question:

PC Networking Problem?

I have connected 2 of my home pc's and they were working perfectly, internet, file sharing etc, I turned it off overnight and turned it back on in the morning and now the connection doesn't work. I can still get onto the internet with the host computer, and the file sharing still works, but the other one is asking for a new IP address.

I'll appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks

  1. Change the IP address to automatic. Then click on Start > Run > Type "cmd" then a black box opens > Type into the box "ipconfig /release" (Note: Space between inconfig and /). It will then release the IP address. Then type "ipconfig /renew" (Note: Space between inconfig and /). It then should allocate an IP address that is not taken to your computer. To check your IP address click on Start > Run > Type "cmd" > When the box opens type "ipconfig" and hit enter. Your IP address will be displayed.

    Hope this helps.

  2. ummm, so the host computer is working and the other one isn't, weird but you should do an internet troubleshoot on the other computer to get a clue to what the problem is, also what do you mean by turned it off, is this dial up or a broadband cable modem, I mean i use ADSL broadband and my internet runs 24/7 like most do....

If it's not working on the other pc as well check the IP settings on the host computer and make sure your ip settings are correct, its quite easy really...

  3. set your ip address to auto, then from command prompt type ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew.
