PC and PlayStation 3 gamers to get Limbo, PSP Engine helping turn PSP games into PS3 titles
Playdead have officially confirmed that Limbo, their award winning platformer, is set to hit both PlayStation 3 consoles and PCs in the near future.
Apparently the game’s developer saw the potential of launching their unique title on more than just one platform. Originally a Microsoft Xbox 360 exclusive, the game will now be a multiplatform title and looks almost certain to perform well in terms of sales.
The game centres around a little boy who is apparently lost in his own dream. The black and white theme of the visuals adds a unique touch and helps set up the mood and atmosphere, which have earned the game so many awards.
Although Playdead have not announced an official release date, the fact that the game has already been developed for one console means that whether the studio opt to build the game up again or to simply port it, it should not take too long to do so. It is
safe to say that players can expect the game to release by the end of the year.
Prior to the announcement by Playdead, the PlayStation 3 release of the game was strongly rumoured after the Korean ratings board listed an application for the game from Sony. It seems that the speculation has shifted from a case of ‘if’, to a matter of
‘when’.
Sony made several announcements relating to PlayStation Portable games making their way on to the PlayStation 3, with a host of enhancements including having been remastered in High Definition. Now the electronics giant is sharing just how it is turning
portable games into their redefined console versions.
Using the newly announced PSP Engine, the name shared by Sony’s Kentaro Suzuki, Sony will be able to render existing PSP titles in HD, as mentioned earlier, as well as in full stereoscopic 3D.
The technology was revealed at the Game Tools & Middleware Forum, which was held in Tokyo recently and was well received.
The Remaster series of games will see popular PSP titles remastered in HD and 3D for the PlayStation 3, or to be more specific, God of War: Chains of Olympus and God of War: Ghost of Sparta, previously exclusive to the PSP, will now be on the PS3.
While Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD is confirmed for Japan, one can rest assured of the fact that it is the first of many games in the remaster series. This opens the door for other hits like Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror, Syphon Filter: Logan’s
Shadow, Killzone Liberation and Resistance Retribution to make their way on to console gaming as well.
