PCB chief selectors Iqbal Qasim backs Misbah to continue as Test and ODI skipper - Cricket News Update
Pakistan Cricket Board’s chief selectors http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Misbah-ul-Haq-c1972 as the national skipper, in the wake of Pakistan cricket team's Test series whitewash at the hands of South Africa will be unfair.
Qasim, who was appointed as the national chief selector last year, said that it was not fair to sack Misbah on the basis of one bad Test series.
"I don't think it is fair for these calls to remove Misbah as captain on the basis of one bad Test series. One must keep in mind that he has led the side ably and successfully since 2010," Qasim said during a media interaction here in Lahore on Thursday.
Misbah, who skippers the national cricket team in Test and one-day format of the game, has been under fire since his side’s humiliating 3-0 Test series defeat against World No. 1 ranked South Africa, at the latter’s backyard.
Former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 cricketers and critics held a complete lack of strategy and planning by Misbah responsible for the national team’s recent capitulation in South Africa, and asked the PCB to look for a new Test and ODI captain.
Misbah, who will turn 39 in May this year, was appointed as the national Test captain in 2010 and was given the reins of the ODI and T20 sides as well in May 2011, after the Pakistan Cricket Board sacked http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shahid-Afridi-c2482 following his media outburst. Misbah
led the side quite successfully in the longer formats of the game over the last two years. The most noticeable achievement of Misbah’s tenure at the helm is Pakistan’s 3-0 Test series win over http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 in January last year.
However, he failed to impress the fans and selectors with his captaincy skills in the shortest format of the game. In May last year, the PCB selectors gave http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohammad-Hafeez-c76898 the charge of the national T20 side, while retaining Misbah as the captain in the
other two formats of the game.
"To be fair we must remember that Misbah has led the side well in difficult times for Pakistan cricket since 2010 and has also performed satisfactorily himself as a batsman. We must remember that we have not played any international cricket at home in Misbah's
tenure as captain because of security issues," Qasim said.
"He has done well and to judge him on basis of one bad series is not fair," the chief selector added. Qasim admitted that Pakistan had badly lost the Test series in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757. "No doubt we were up against the top Test side in the world and we were playing
in demanding and different conditions. But we didn't expect the team to do so badly. What went wrong needs to be seen after the tour is over. To make demands for changes before that is not right," concluded the Pakistan chief selector.
