PCB insists on monitoring Danish Kaneria’s case - Cricket News Update
While the discarded Pakistan leg-spinner is currently serving a life ban for his alleged role in the spot-fixing corruption, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has insisted that they are closely watching the progress made in the bowler’s case.
The governing body was severely criticised for abandoning its convicted players in the midst of accusation from other boards. However, PCB has strongly downplayed the notion and said that they are waiting for the outcome of his appeal against the ruling
by the English and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in June.
The 31-year-old bowler, Pakistan’s fourth highest wicket-taker in Tests, was banned for life by an ECB disciplinary hearing panel, which overheard the proceedings following the spot-fixing scandal involving former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Essex-c783 bowler, Mervyn Westfield.
Pakistan Board’s integrity committee, which was then headed by Chairman Chaudhary Zaka http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755.
The right-arm bowler, who was cleared by the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Scotland-c756 Yard Police after their investigation, claimed innocence and indicated his intention to contest the verdict.
"It is a wrong assumption that we are not keeping track of our players. We are following the Kaneria case and waiting to see when his appeal is held," the Board official said.
"We even sent our own lawyer to London to attend the hearing of Kaneria's case. But until his appeal is heard and a decision is made he remains suspended from playing in Pakistan," the official added.
PCB is a signatory of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 anti-corruption code, which makes it binding on all its signatory members to follow the verdict of a member country, if it penalises a player.
Kaneria, with 261 Test wickets in 61 Tests, is currently residing at a relative’s place in London and has been facing acute financial difficulties in pursuing his case due to the high legal costs. The Karachi-based bowler, who plays for Habib Bank team in
the domestic circuit, might also lose his job following PCB’s directives
"Kaneria's best chance of getting his life ban overturned or a reduced sentence lies in appealing to the Switzerland based Court of Arbitration for Sports but if his appeal is rejected, he will face problems getting finances to cover the costs of appealing
to the CAS,” a source close to the bowler said.
