PCB promises full cooperation in Danish Kaneria spot-fixing scandal – Cricket News Update
The Integrity Committee of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has promised to cooperate fully with its English counterpart, if the ECB wishes to launch an inquiry into Mervyn Westfield’s claim that http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Danish-Kaneria-c1314 was the key figure in the spot-fixing incident
which landed him a 4 month prison sentence.
“This match was an http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 player we are obviously looking into the matter with a lot of concern,” PCB lawyer, Taffuzul Rizvi said, adding that the PCB would not show
any leniency towards a player found guilty of breaking the law.
Former Essex medium-pacer, Mervyn Westfield, who was charged with spot-fixing during a Pro40 match between Essex and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Durham-c782 in September 2009, named his former county teammate, Kaneria, as the middle-man who targeted him with an illegal proposition during
his hearing.
The leg-spinner’s lawyer, Farogh Naseem, has pointed out that his client, who was charged with the crime in 2010, was later cleared by the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625, following investigations after the incident. Therefore, it should naturally be assumed that
any chance of Kaneria’s involvement in the case is ruled out. The cricketer has insisted that the accusations are false, and has vowed to defend himself and clear his name, claiming he is innocent.
The PCB however, has expressed the willingness to re-investigate. Admitting that the allegations has raised some suspicions, the PCB maintained that official procedures would be adhered to.
“A detailed inquiry is required and the integrity committee will resume its proceedings in due course. The PCB will be working closely with the ECB to get to the bottom of this matter,” Rizvi confirmed.
Pointing out that even in Westfield’s case, a suspension followed the sentence, Rizvi stressed that there was no need for a rash, “knee-jerk reaction." "The integrity committee has taken up a detailed inquiry proceeding and obviously fairness has to be followed
in all proceedings,” he explained.
For this reason, since none of Westfield’s allegations have been proved, Kaneria will continue as captain for Sindh in the domestic Pentangular Cup, currently taking place in Pakistan.
