PCB selection committee to meet today
The Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) selection committee, headed by Chief selector http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754.
Last week the committee couldn’t finalise the squad because the PCB’s integrity committee hadn’t resolved the issue of clearance of players including Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal and Danish Kaneria. The meeting will be held at the Qaddafi stadium, Lahore. The
selection committee has its hands tied because it cannot select any player who has not been cleared by the PCB or the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Speaking to the press the Chief selector said, “We will be holding a meeting on Tuesday and might announce the squads for both the assignments soon afterwards.” However, he clarified that the announcement of the players may face another delay if the integrity
committee doesn’t make a final decision on the issue of clearing the players. “We may delay the announcement by a day if the situation remains unclear, as we have one more day left [before the ICC deadline].”
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 is facing a selection nightmare just before the World Cup because some players are suspended, while others have not been cleared for selection. Until the board gives a clear picture about the status of these players, the selection committee cannot
finalise the names of the players.
The basic task of the integrity committee is to probe the financial details of Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Danish-Kaneria-c1314. The three players are under scrutiny for their alleged links with bookmakers. However, no formal charges have been leveled against
them, and the ICC has not presented any evidence that would suggest their involvement in match-fixing. Three more players - Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif - are currently suspended from playing any format of the game for their alleged involvement
in spot-fixing during the English tour.
The charges against them were leveled after a British tabloid leaked evidence that suggested the trio’s links with a bookie named http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mazhar-c75448 Majeed. An ICC hearing into the spot-fixing case is set to begin from the 6 January and last until the 11th.
Keeping the date of the hearing in view it seems almost impossible for the trio to make it into the 30-member World Cup squad. However, Malik, Akmal and Kaneria may get their names cleared today by the integrity committee, resulting in their inclusion in
the team for the World Cup.
