PCB to decide Kaneria's fate in January - Cricket News Update
The discarded Pakistani leg-spinner, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Danish-Kaneria-c1314, will have to wait till the end of January next year to know whether the integrity committee of Pakistan Cricket Board will clear him for for selection in the national team or not.
This was revealed by a PCB official on Saturday, November 12, 2011. The official, on the condition of anonymity, told the media reporters that the board is waiting for Essex player, Mervyn Westfield’s trial to complete before clearing Kaneria’s name, and
Westfield’s trial is expected to complete in January next year.
"Once the trial is over we will know if the investigating authorities involved Kaneria's name in the spot-fixing case,” said a PCB official. “If the trial is completed without his name cropping up during it than we will know where he stands," he added further.
Both Kaneria and Westfield were arrested by the Essex Police last year after they were alleged of being involved in spot fixing in a Pro-40 clash between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Durham-c782 in the 2009 season. Although the Pakistan spinner was later cleared by the probe committee,
he still remains the subject of Essex police’s criminal investigation and can be called if needed.
Kaneria, in July, filed a petition with the Sindh High Court against his undue snub by the Pakistan Cricket Board selectors. In the petition Kaneria had claimed that he is not involved in any spot-fixing case and has been cleared by the Essex police as well
as the International Cricket Council (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625) but the PCB is not clearing him for selection in the national team.
Earlier this week the Sindh High court had dismissed Kaneria’s petition against the PCB, mentioning that the court does not have the jurisdiction to hear the case, a point that was raised by PCB’s legal advisor, Tafazzul Rizvi, in the first hearing of the
case.
A source in the PCB reckoned that one realistic reason behind SHC dismissing Kaneria’s petition could be the decision of the Crown Court in London against the Pakistan trio of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohammad-Asif-c1993, all involved in spot fixing.
"There is a feeling that Kaneria has a strong case but the court perhaps didn't want to take responsibility for any outright decision at a time when the spot-fixing issue is hot," said the source.
Kaneria, only the second hindu player in the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 at Faisalabad, and has so far played 61 Test matches picking up 261 wickets at an average of 34.79 and an economy rate of 3.07. The
prolific leg-spinner has two 10-wicket and 15 five-wicket hauls in his name. Kaneria has never been a regular part of Pakistan’s one-day squad and has till date played only 18 One Day Internationals, claiming 15 wickets.
