PCB to send World Cup player list to ICC for approval
The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 Cricket Board has decided that it will ask the International Cricket Council’s Anti Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) to clear its players before announcing the team for the World Cup next
year.
According to a decision taken at a meeting held by the PCB’s governing board, the PCB will submit a list of the Pakistani probables to the anti-corruption unit for approval. Once the ACSU has approved the
list of those who can be selected in the team, the board will send the list to the selectors to select from.
The World Cup laws stipulate that the teams have to announce their 30-member squads before 30 November while the final squad will be needed to be announced by January 19. According to the PCB chairman, Ijaz
Butt, the ACSU will be allowed to give their feedback to the board if there were some doubts over the players’ integrity.
The move is seen as a part of PCB’s exercise to clean up its act after a year of controversies and problems. Three of the Pakistani cricketers, Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif, were allegedly
involved in spot-fixing and will now have ICC’s three-member anti-corruption tribunal - headed by Michael Beloff - hear their cases.
The move also comes after there was increasing pressure on Pakistan to put in place a code of conduct that all the cricketers had to sign before going on tours. Earlier, the Pakistani board had withdrawn
the leg-spinner http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 but no apparent reasons were provided.
Kaneria had earlier been arrested by the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Essex-c783 police for allegedly been involved in spot-fixing. However, he was later released without charges.
Similarly, the PCB has agreed to the ICC’s request not to send PCB’s lawyers to be a part of the arbitration process for the three cricketers involved in the spot-fixing scam.
It has been one of the most controversial years in Pakistan cricket. Apart from the spot-fixing scandal that shook the world, the PCB had earlier penalised six of its cricketers earlier and handed over varying
penalties to them before overturning the penalties. Zulqarnain Haider had then fled away from Dubai to UK alleging death threats associated with match-fixing.
