PCB wants http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Danish-Kaneria-c1314 to produce a clearance certificate
The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 Cricket Board (PCB) has asked its discarded leg-spinner, Danish Kaneria to submit a 'clearance certificate' from the Essex police if he wants himself to be cleared for selection by the integrity committee of PCB.
This was revealed by the legal advisor of the Board, Tafazzul Rizvi on Thursday.
"We had asked for police transcripts but were told by Kaneria's lawyers that they weren't available," said Rizvi while talking to a leading sports website.
Rizvi said that the integrity committee of PCB will allow the leg-spinner to resume his international career only if he produced the required documents before the board.
"We need something to judge what is happening there and what happened in the case, however, so we've now asked for a clearance certificate from Essex who were his employers in the UK at the time, in a case which took place in the
UK," the legal advisor further added.
Matters between the integrity committee and the spinner came to a deadlock after the committee asked Kaneria to submit a copy of the statement he had given to the Essex Police during investigation of a spot-fixing case but the cricketer
failed to submit the required documents.
Kaneria was arrested last year by the Essex police for his alleged involvement in a Pro 40 game between Essex and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Durham-c782, during the 2009 county season. He was later released on bail and eventually cleared by the probe panel as the
police did not file any proof against him.
However, his http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Essex-c783 teammate, Mervyn Westfield was charged of being involved in spot-fixing and is due to face a trial and if the jury deemed necessary, Kaneria can still be summoned as part of the case.
Kaneria and his lawyer have been insisting that they do not have any transcripts with them as the cricketer’s involvement in the spot-fixing case was over. But the PCB is stern on its point that the leg-spinner would have to produce
the clearance certificate in order to get his name cleared by the integrity committee.
Asked, what sort of content the clearance certificate should include, the PCB legal advisor said that the board just want to have an idea what the Essex county says about the player and the case, as Kaneria was their player at the
time.
