Question about Metformin. I had taken this medicine awhile back and had a horrible time with it. I was constantly sick. Since I am TTC now, should I go back on it, even with the bad side effects? I do have PCOS and just recently stopped taking BC. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

  1. Yes, you should really consider taking metformin if you have PCOS.  This significantly helps with regulating your cycle and help with ovulation.

Try a smaller dosage (1x day) and you can switch to a "low-carb"/low-glycemic diet instead (which has the same impact as metformin i.e. reducing insulin resistance). Whenever you do have a high-carb meal, take metformin then. That is what my wife did as she couldn't take 3x day - so just took 1x day with low-carb diet. She quickly dropped weight and her cycles came back to mostly normal and ovulating more frequently.  Got pregnant within a year using metformin. Continued taking metformin for first trimester to minimize miscarriage risk.

    Good luck.

  2. I first started using Metformin a few years ago when I was first diagnosed with PCOS.  I couldn't leave the house because of cramps and was always needing the toilet (if you know what I mean!).  I had such a terrible time that I stopped using them.

When I first went to the fertility clinic I was told by the Nurse that it was important to try and use Metformin again as it really helps PCOS.  She still said I should try to take them again, despite side effects.  So I followed her advice by starting on 500mg a day (before bed works well as you can sleep through symptoms).  After a week I upped the dose to 850mg twice a day and I haven't had as many symptoms as before.  Can't really say exactly why.  So I suggest trying again.  It's really worth it if it can help your TTC!

Good luck and loads of BaBy DuSt!!! xOx

  3. I work at a hospital and have had many women use metformin to get pregnant.  Best thing is to talk to your doctor.  But I see no problems
