Question:

PCOS and Surgery!?!?!?!?

by  |  earlier

My husband and I have been TTC for almost a year. Back in November 2007, I was diagnosed with PCOS. I was wondering if I could get surgery to remove the cysts?? If so, what are the risks??? Also, any woman who has had that done before, will you be kind enough to share!?!? I plan on asking my doctor but I have to wait untill my new insurance kicks in, which is 2 1/2 more weeks.

Thanks

  1. only 1 year? thats an average of a normal couple..

I was diagnosed with PCOS when i was 13. Im now 25 (26 on the 9th).

I started ttc when i was 16. took me 9 years.

As for the cysts - it depends on the size of theem, if theres heaps  of tiny little ones they will not operate. but there is cases of large cysts but only a few on the ovaries... although this is not as common as heaps of small ones, if large they do operate.

there is a few thing that i did over the years to help- eat healthy and i mean no processed stuff pre packaged etc, pcos is common with weight probs to, so this will also make it harder if this is the case.

ask ur doc about metformin.. it is an insulin resistant drug used for people with diabetes and pcos.  i actually had this to regulate my period and was on it for 1 month in oct last year, went of in nov then found out i was preggers in dec. when i went on the metformin was when i had enough of ttc, so i guess that played ahuge part... ever hear those stories with people ttcand dont, but when they give themselves a break it happens... clomid is another popular drug people used as well as fertmoid or even serophene as a fertility drug.

Ive been strugglin with the impact pcos for years, but in the end it all happened and thats when i gave up... i ended up havin my little girl 6 days ago...

baby dust and i wish u the best as i know how frustrating it is.. ans after 9 years....

if u need more info on what i went through and a few little tricks about when ur ovulating please email me,

    samantha

  2. you can get them lasered which "pops" them.  however, that doesn't treat the cluster of pcos symptoms which is likely what is actually dictating your infertility. you need to have your insulin checked and try non invasive drugs first like metformin and clomid, which are all many women with pcos need. the cysts may not be the problem at all but the havoc they and your ovaries have wrecked on your system.

talk to your doc. i dont think surgery is what you should be looking at.

  3. There is increased risk of ovarian cancer with having surgery to remove the cysts and with PCOS they would grow back.  I was diagnosed with PCOS at 19 years old.  I didn't have any luck getting pregnant until i realized the connection with insulin problems and went on the low carb diet and lost 50 lbs then i got my periods more normal again and suddenly i was pregnant.  Now I am due in a few weeks with my third son.  I still have the cysts on both ovaries and they come and go but i would never do the surgery after the Dr told me the risks of ovarian cancer from the surgery.
