I was diagnosed with PCOS almost 2 years ago. I went to my Dr. yesterday and was talking to him about going on Metformin or Birth Control to help with the weight issue, hair loss, acne, oily skin, etc. and he said that I was not a canidate for Metformin because I have low blood sugars? I range from 72-84 fasting. He said that if I was to take Metformin it would cause my blood sugars to go too low, and I would get the shakes, sweats, confusing as a diebetic would. So, he put me on Ortho Tryciclen Lo. Has anyone encountered this type of situation? PCOS with low blood sugars?

  1. I also have PCOS, but was a candidate for Metformin. You need to know that metformin was used primarily for diabetics to help regulate insulin levels. This is why you shouldn't take it. Ortho tryciclen lo works just as well.

    Good luck!

  2. Well, for one, I'm glad that you do not have high blood sugar!  But the low blood sugar is a precourse for high, so please eat right and exercise and take that medicine that your doctor gave you.  You might also look up herbal remedies for PCOS.  I have PCOS too, but my blood sugar usually stays at about 100-120, so I am on Metformin.  I'm looking into the herbal stuff myself.  Just google PCOS and it should bring up some websites for you to study and get some more info on it and what you can do to help yourself.  This condition does not have to run (or ruin should I say) our lives.  Honestly, the best thing that helps those of us with PCOS is a change in diet.  It's not that we are fat and have no willpower, but our bodies break down food differently and that is the reason why we need to eat differently than others.  You might also look into Chinese medicine.  I know others with PCOS who have tried this and it has helped them with weight loss and also fertility.  Hope this helps and if you have any questions or want to chat, just email me.  Good luck!
