Question:

PECS (Picture Exchange Program) software at affordable price?

Hi,

I'm looking for the PECS program or boardmaker to work with at home. I teach autistic children, and have the software available to me at work, however never enough time to use it. The county I work for will not give me a copy to use at home. Currently I am looking for a task analysis for washing hands. Does anyone know where there is affordable boardmaker or similar icons online for free or for an affordable price?

Thanks a lot!

  1. Sometimes you can find old copies on ebay, though those versions may not be compatible with the ones you're using at school.

Another option, if you have a laptop - once the Boardmaker CD is loaded, it is not needed for running the program. I will sometimes load it on my laptop at work, then leave the CD at school and take the laptop home to work.

  2. Similar icons online at http://www.trainland.tripod.com

    A lifesaver website, that one.

  3. Sorry can not help you on that one.

  4. This website has lots of free pictures you can use for making PECS, but it is a lot easier to make picture boards, etc with Boardmaker.  Try making some basic pecs that you will use often onto a word document and saving it that way on a memory stick or disk.  You can also get free trial versions of Boardmaker online.  Boardmaker is great, but sometimes you can find the same type of thing online.  Otherwise, especially with the special population you work with, it may work better to take digital photos of the real object to laminate and use as boards.  Often, children with autistic spectrum disorders need more concrete representations than a symbolic picture, and it may be more affordable, personal, and concrete for them by using photos of real objects.
