  1. For a permanent fix do it properly, however if $ aren't available or it isn't worth spending the money on the car you can try a can of gunk.

I used a bottle of CarGo SealUP in a 106, but after emailing the manufacturer I didn't follow the directions on the bottle. The bottle says to flush, run for 20mins with bottle in, drain, dry for 24 hours, refill with antifreeze. This is because the active ingredient in liquid form is incompatible with glycol and will combine to form jelly. However it sets and becomes inert on contact with air, so is fine after it is dried.

I live where there is no need for a antifreeze in the coolant so I was able to flush the engine thoroughly to remove all antifreeze, add SealUp, run for 20mins then top up with some corrosion inhibitor (important) and run the car leaving the SealUp permanently in the radiator. After over 5,000 km it was ready for another $10 bottle however this was not bad since it would consume the entire radiator full of water in a few km before the treatment!

Don't bother using gunk that doesn't guarantee a permanent fix (which probably means it needs to use the ingredient that is incompatible with glycol)

  2. forget any quick fix....split it and do it properly

  3. my head gasket is going too, i have an audi a3, having to top the water up every day and when i open the oil cap it is all gunky, had a mechanic look at it and he said ooh yes it is going, cant afford to have it done yet so i put radiator weld in it as i couldnt find steel seal locally, and hey presto, havnt had to put water in it as yet, i know it wont last forever, but it will give me a bit more time
