PGA Championship 2017 to be held at Quail Hollow Club
North Carolina’s Quail Hollow Club has been selected by the PGA of America for the 99th PGA event. The Club is known as the third most popular golf venues. It will be hosting the season’s final event and is already appraised by top ranked Golfers such as Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. Woods had already envisaged that this would be the site for the major Championship.
After a small discussion between high ranked golfers, the announcement on Tuesday confirmed the selection of this course for hosting the PGA Championship in the coming season of 2017.
The Quail Hollow is both, difficult and old. This interesting and unique layout has always managed to attract some of the top players. Tiger Woods is one strong example. He had achieved a victory in 2007 at the same venue and then made a show at Quail after he failed to join in the play at the start of the season. Reasons for Woods missing the beginning of the season is known to almost every Tiger Woods fan, his extra marital affairs.
According to Woods in 2009, Quail seemed like a nice candidate for hosting a PGA or US Open Championship.
Last May however, Geoff Oglivy explained that the Hollow is a notch up in the challenge ladder. He also added that if all the players came to this place and played an Open or Major they would actually feel it was a Open or a Championship. According to Oglivy, this place has the aura of a Major event.
The Club, founded in 1959, was designed by George Cobb which further went through renovations in 1997 and then in 2003 by Fazio. Along with Pinehurst Resort and Country as well as Tanglewood Golf Club, Quail Hollow, after hosting the 2017 PGA Championship event, would be included in the list of the only venues in NC to have hosted a PGA Major.
The 18-hole course follows a strict 72-par with a 7442-yard layout and it seems like Joe Sterkan doesn’t need a lot of changes in it. He gave fairly positive views concerning the layout. However, changes may be seen in all 18-holes with a new type of grass known as ‘Bent’, which is usually more resistant to heat. Along with the grass, the very avid fans need to be catered as well. State aid may be demanded in relation to making more entrances for the fans and widening the road outside the venue according to Harris.
According to the review by top players, the closing 3-hole stretch, formerly known as “The Green Mile”, is a beautiful nightmare for many. It is believed that no changes will be seen in the most difficult Green Mile since it would aid in providing a lot of drama on the tour. According to Steranka the Green Mile has everything that a top professional needs and is hence famous for a reason.
The selection of this venue was announced by Harris and Perdue, who were sitting next to each other on Tuesday along with the CEO Joe Steranka. Steranka in his announcement clearly stated that Quail Hollow most definitely deserved this.
Harris was all smiles during the conference and stated this is exactly what he had envisioned some decades before. Harris explained with great pride that it wasn’t necessary for them to build greens like the TPC. He said that The Quail is just a mixture of their natural characteristics and Fazio’s enhancement. Just like diamonds need a bit of shine, around three years of new greens shall do the trick for the Hollow.
According to Jim Remy, President of American PGA, Quail Hollow is a club which is much respected among top golfing circles. In 2017, Hollow would be able to attract a large amount of players from around the world. This Club would attract the finest players in the World and around 50,000 people in a day. The Championship due to be hosted in 2017will be showed on a number of different channels to millions of viewers, and, hence, a source for millions of dollars for Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte.
