PGA Championship belatedly underway
Play finally got under way at the PGA Championship earlier today, after heavy fog had pushed the starting times back by more than three hours.
That means the last major of the year's opening round is unlikely to be completed today, the first round liable to continue early tomorrow morning before the second round gets under way.
Teeing off at the first were Bo Van Pelt, Vaughn Taylor and Scott Hebert, while starting on the back nine were Tim Petrovic, Jason Day and Rich Steinmetz. Petrovic and Van Pelt forged an early lead at the Whistling Straits, Kohler, Wisconsin tournament, each man beginning with a birdie, while Australia's Day had to settle for par on the 1st.
But currently topping the leaderboard is another Aussie, Stuart Appleby, who is three-under-par after an impressive three birdies on the 10th, 11th and 12th. The USA's Derek Lamely and Kyle Flinton are each tied for second place on two-under-par, while England's Luke Donald is one-under after a couple of holes, while Paul Casey is level par, having played the first.
All of which signifies very little at this stage, but hey, at least the guys are finally playing some golf. Tiger Woods tees off imminently, while his main rival and the favourite here Phil Mickelson isn't set to start until 4.45pm local time - that's 10.45pm GMT. In the meantime, let's hope Japan's Ryo Ishikawa can correct a somewhat suspect start; the Japanese 17-year-old is two-over after his first four holes.
