PGA Championship - golfers against the Whistling’s winds
There is a very famous saying from the experts of golf that Golf is a game in which the golfer is against the golf course and not against anyone else. This statement is particularly true when it comes to the Whistling Straits. The PGA Championship is taking place at the Whistling Straits; although it is not the final event but surely the beginning of recognition for any golfer. The course is one of the most brutal and technical courses in the golfing arena. It requires the golfers to come up with the best of techniques to tackle the eight holes on the shoreline of the Michigan Lake. Not only this, the golfers have to defeat the winds that blow when the ball goes high.
With the PGA Championship at the Whistling course on our hands, we will have a look at some of the contenders for the title. Questions and speculations come from all round concerning the fact that who would win? Would it be a veteran? Or will it be a surprise winner? Or will it be another dominating performance by the top golfers in the business?
Ernie Els is without a doubt one of the strong candidates for the title with his skilful tee that helps him combat against the restraining winds at the Whistling course. Coupled with this is this golfer’s experience that is vital to win a major Championship. The only thing that this golfer needs is to be consistent with his putter. Els’ putter was one the main reason that he lost the US Open. Ernie finished second in 2004, as Vijay Singh wrote his name in the history books.
Another golfer, Phil Mickelson has similar playing style as Ernie Els. With his unmatched skills in golf, he is surely one of the favourites to grab the opportunity and win the title, and as a result become the World no. 1 for the first time in his career. The only problem that Phil faces is the unpredictability of this aggressive player. This can be supported by the fact that the past Firestone tournament saw him in a good position with only four shots off the leader, but with an abrupt change in his performance, Phil fell way off the leader. However, if Phil Mickelson manages to come up with the performance that he is capable of, then he can easily take it to the top.
Another player who can meet the challenges imposed by the course with his diverse shots and unshakable confidence that helps him tackle the pressure, is Paul Casey. Paul utilizes his skills to the fullest, and is able to come up with good and consistent performances. Although he had been criticized a great deal for his playing style during the Open Championship; the fact remained that Louis Oosthuizen played better than him. If the various elements in his game blend together, it would surely result in a trophy in the hands of Paul Casey.
It’s not only the skills that count at the Whistling course but backing up with confidence is also one of the important aspects that ease the golfer’s competition to a title. Hunter Mahan is one player who doesn’t suffer with this problem and is filled with confidence. The golfer secured his second victory of the season and the third as a professional golfer past week at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. Mahan has not only managed to be known as one of the best drivers of the golf ball but also a player who comes up with above-average performances consistently. With his skills and accurate golfing abilities, he is without a doubt one of the contenders for the title in the upcoming PGA Championship.
Jeff Overton could also be the lucky one to grab the title, experts speculate. The hard-working golfer has done everything right this season except for the fact that he hasn’t been able to win a tournament. In the 14 tournaments he has taken part, Jeff has never finished outside the top 25.
With all these predictions in place now, everyone waits to see which golfer can manage to beat the winds of the Whistling course and get his name jotted down in the history books.
