PGA Professional National Championship: Families play important role in the success of players
Alan Morin carded a one-under par 71 in the final round of the PGA Professional National Championship at the Bayonet Black Horse Golf Course, to share the 14th position, on Wednesday, June 27, 2012.
It was not the 13th place that made Morin cheer, in fact, he was pleased to earn a berth for this year’s PGA Championship by placing himself among the top-20 players in the event.
Both his parents, Adrian and Arthur Morin, followed him on the course throughout the four rounds and watched him display his skills.
This is not the first time that his parents accompanied him on the course. In 1998, they were present at the Olympic Club, where Morin was contending against the biggest names of the game, after making it to the US Open through the qualifying school.
Thereafter, he participated in many other PGA Tour events as well as the major golf championships.
"We first followed him in a major championship in 1998, when he qualified for the U.S. Open at Olympic Club," said Alan's father, Arthur Morin.
"He made it through qualifying, gave us a call and told us to make some reservations for San Francisco".
“Since then, he's played in four PGA Championships, two U.S. Opens, several Honda Classic events and several of these PGA Club Professional Championships,” he added. “And we've just continued to follow him every step of the way”.
Marty Jertson was another player who was followed by his family on the course. Kellyn Jertson, his wife, provided him with the motivation he needed. He recorded a three-under par 69 on Wednesday.
As a result, he confirmed a place among the top-10 players on the leaderboard. He was tied for the seventh position with a one-under par tournament score.
In the meantime, Bob Sowards’ wife, Lynn Sowards, was also present on the course. However, she preferred not to walk with her husband, as she felt a bit superstitious and did not want to see him make mistakes.
According to Lynn, Bob knows about her consistent support for him. Therefore, it was not necessary for her to be with him, physically.
